Just made a Twitter account...
…to coincide with this Tumblr! I did it more for friends of mine that have said they’d like to read but don’t have/don’t want/don’t understand Tumblr and wanted to read.  Thought I’d share it with y’all, too.  Twitter.com/ModSouthernGent

The State of State Science Standards
mocus: from Greg Laden (@gregladen) The vast majority of American public school students are proficient (sic) [probably meant deficient] in the level of science learning expected for their age group. The Thomas B. Fordham Institute has issued “The State of Science Standards 2012” as part of an effort to assess the causes of this dismal state of affairs. Read more… Seriously, TN?  We got...

Finally!
Something I can happily report about my home state and adopted city.  I recently talked about Stacey Campfield, a state representative from Knoxville, and his ever-so-enlightened comments about HIV infection, his most recent bigoted, inflammatory, and completely false statements.  Don’t forget he is also the lead sponsor of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.  Well, I’m happy...

Rep. Stacey Campfield Has Got To Go...
Seriously.  I’m so tired of Tennessee being in the national news for crazy things like this.  In a radio interview on Thursday, Knoxville’s incredibly intelligent state representative said,  “My understanding is that ut us virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS trough heterosexual sex.” I would really like to see him say that to the face...

It's Like a Deja Vu Nightmare...
Tennessee had yet another teen commit suicide in the last week from being bullied.  His name was Phillip Parker from Gordonsville, TN, a town about an hour east of Nashville.  He was 14 years old.  14.  And his life is over.  All because other students couldn’t just leave him alone.  While acceptance of everyone would be great, it’s unrealistic.  But tolerance or apathy is mandatory....

Yet Another Example of Tennessee Ignorance →
Tennessee has been in the news a lot lately, it seems.  And as much as I love my home state, I’m less than thrilled.  None of the LGBT stories coming out of Tennessee have been the least bit positive.  We’ve had a gay teen suicide, a father (as well as a pastor)  inciting other church members to assault his son and son’s boyfriend when they tried to attend church, and now this....

Southern Pride vs Confederate Pride
fifty50fifty: I am thoroughly Southern. My family on my mother’s side is all Arkansas and my family on father’s side is all Alabama.  I’ve got a lot of Southern pride.  In fact, I’m pretty sure that after I get out and see the world a bit, I’ll come back to the South because there’s really no place on earth I’d rather live. I love the South, so it really bothers me to see people who equate...

[trigger warning, anti-gay, anti-trans sentiments] Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you, the 2012 Republican Presidential Candidates:
Michelle Bachmann: "Don’t misunderstand. I am not here bashing people who are homosexuals, who are lesbians, who are bisexual, who are transgender. We need to have profound compassion for people who are dealing with the very real issue of sexual dysfunction in their life and sexual identity disorders.” (2004)
Ron Paul: "The rate of AIDS infection is on the increase again. From the gay point of view, the reasons seem quite sensible. First, these men don't really see a reason to live past their fifties. They are not married, they have no children, and their lives are centered on new sexual partners... because sex is the center of their lives, they want it to be as pleasurable as possible, which means unprotected sex. Third, they enjoy the attention & pity that comes with being sick." (1995 in a newsletter)
Rick Perry: "I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a Christian, but you don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school. " (2011 in a campaign ad)
Mitt Romney: "I should tell my story. I'm also unemployed." (2011 while speaking to unemployed people in Florida. Romney's net worth is over $200 million.)
Newt Gingrich: "She's not young enough or pretty enough to be the wife of the President. And besides, she has cancer." (1994, about his first wife)
Rick Santorum: "Is anyone saying same-sex couples can’t love each other? I love my children. I love my friends, my brother. Heck, I even love my mother-in-law. Should we call these relationships marriage, too?" (2008)
Michelle Bachmann: "Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn't even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas." (2009 during a debate)
Mitt Romney: "PETA is not happy that my dog likes fresh air." (2006, when questioned about driving 12 hours with his dog in a cage strapped to the top of his car)

You Can't Say That Here...At All...Ever
Many of you may remember my first discussion of the Tennessee state “Don’t Say Gay” Bill or the follow up to it.  Well, one Tennessee school has taken it a step farther.  But the situation isn’t quite as clear-cut as you might think.  Rossville Christian Academy added an anti-gay clause to its school policies.   “Homosexuality is forbidden in scripture (Romans 1:27,...

Back to Tumblrland.
I got back yesterday from a whirlwind trip around the South, plus a little of the midwest.  I left Knoxville, TN on Wednesday around 10am EST headed toward Nashville, TN.  After a quick detour to get my favorite sandwich, I headed toward Clarksville, TN, then up to Paducah, KY.  Thanks to my love for sweet tea, I had to stop more than the average trip, but it was a really nice drive, minus the...

The last magnificent home on Union Avenue
-bobella-: joespake: Will the Nineteenth Century Club fall victim to the track hoes? The Nineteenth Century Club is a philanthropic and cultural women’s organization.  The organization bought the magnificent house at 1433 Union Avenue in 1926.  The mansion was originally built for Rowland J. Darnell in 1909 and was one of many mansions that lined the stretch of  in Midtown. Now it’s the last...

theachievaweava asked: I'm from Lexington, I hope you consider it in the South. People from Kentucky believe that the northest point of Lexington is the cutoff from south to north. Literally the state could be seperated by a horizontal line that is just above Lexington. Anything above it is the North and all below it is the South. What are your thoughts?
